Microsoft Teams now displays up to 9 participants in video chat

Microsoft announced this new feature through Microsoft Team’s Twitter handler.

They write,

We heard you! We’re increasing the number of participants who can be viewed simultaneously on the Microsoft Teams meeting stage to 9. Rolling out soon.

Currently, Teams only allows up to 4 visible video chat windows while the rest sit at the bottom with no video, unless a participant engages in a conversation then they are pulled to the 1 of the 4 windows.

I believe Microsoft will be expanding the number from 9 to more in the near future because 9 probably is okay for smaller companies but for larger corporations 9 should still be less. Zoom, its main rival supports 49 participants.
