Cheers to folks at Redmond for such an incredible milestone. There are 1 Billion Active monthly users for Windows 10 as per the blog post by Microsoft.
Today we’re delighted to announce that over one billion people have chosen Windows 10 across 200 countries resulting in more than one billion active Windows 10 devices. We couldn’t be more grateful to our customers, partners and employees for helping us get here.Yusuf Mehedi – Corporate VP
It took extra 2 years from Microsoft’s earlier and over ambition estimation of reaching 1 billion goal in the first 3 years from its release in mid 2015. Ex Head of Windows – Terry Myerson who at that time expected Windows 10 to reach 1 billion devices by 2018. It could have been possible if Windows 10 Mobile would have lived on.
Microsoft’s plan with Windows 10 was to power Xbox, Windows, Windows 10 Mobile, Hololens & IoTs. With all combined we could probably have seen Windows 10 reaching 1 billion milestone in the first 3 years.
Nevertheless, Windows 10 – now at 1 billion after 5 years from its release is still a big milestone.
Microsoft had also shifted how it tested Windows prior to Windows 10’s release. In Windows 7, and 8 and before, Microsoft would develop features behind closed doors and only reveal updates towards Betas and Release Candidates. With Windows 10, Microsoft opened the doors to the world and developed the operating system with its “Windows Insiders” testers. The idea with Windows Insiders (I am a proud Insider too) was that Windows 10 will be tested by (current number 17.8) millions of testers worldwide, who would provide feedback, upvote or downvote a feature, bring out early problems in the builds.
Today, anyone interested in testing Windows 10 can grab a copy from Windows Insider Program website and start testing and providing feedback to Windows team.
I have fond memories with Windows 10, specially because it was launched here in my hometown, Nairobi – Kenya. I was privileged to attend the launch event and to everyone’s surprise, Microsoft CEO – Satya Nadella was also present at the event.
Below is the Windows 10 launch party in Nairobi and at 1:50 is my moment of fame!
