New MacBook Air, iPad Pro and other announcements from Apple Event

Apple had an eventful October event where not so surprisingly long awaited new Macbook Air, new iPad Pro & Mac Mini were announced. Let’s get into the details, shall we?

MacBook Air

Macbook Air

Last updated nearly 5 years ago. MacBook Air is Apple’s thinnest and lightest laptop ever. When it was first released, it was very well received & praised for its thin form factor with amazing design.

But in the recent years, Apple has largely focused on its flagship product iPhones, iPads, Apple Watch and MacBook Pro.

The new MacBook Air (2018) has finally got Retina display in a 13.3 inch screen. Touch ID first introduced in iPhone 5S, has now landed in MacBook Air secured by T2 security. Air has the 3rd gen butterfly keyboard and 50% narrower bezels. Apple has also, of course refreshed the processor with the latest 8th gen Intel Core dual-core processors. Apple also claims the battery life has been vastly improved. MacBook Air now supports up to 16GB of RAM, and up to 1.5TB SSD storage, which is awesome. It also comes with two USB Type C thunderbolt ports and a headphone jack.

The new MacBook Air ships in three colors, Space Gray, Silver and Gold with a starting price of USD 1,119 (roughly Ksh 122,400) and starts shipping on November 7.

iPad Pro

The biggest change since the first iPad is that there is no home button anymore, just like all the new iPhones. That also means, it is the first iPad to introduce Face ID (which works in both portrait & landscape mode, unlike iPhone X) replacing the Touch ID.

Apple has given a significant upgrade to the iPad Pro this year, and mostly, for the better.

iPad Pro (2018) still maintains 12.9 inch screen size but with smaller bezels giving more room for display. Ditching the home button also means Apple has brought the same gesture navigation like it first brought it in iPhone X.

What’s inside the shell.. it is packed with A12X Bionic chip that Apple says is 35% faster. Apple says it has All Day battery life. I wouldn’t doubt so much here because iPad’s battery life has been really good from the first iPad and has only improved overtime. But, we will have to test thoroughly to say it really stands at all day. Surprisingly, Apple has got rid of its lightning port and replaced it with USB Type C for power. With this port, you can charge your iPad Pro, of course and as well your iPhone. And finally, there is no more headphone jack on the iPad Pro.

The new 11 inch iPad Pro starts at USD 799 and 12.9 inch starts USD 999. Both starts shipping on November 7.

Mac Mini

Mac mini reprised with beefed up specs at the event finally. The new Mac mini comes with 8th gen 6 core or quad core processors with up to 5 times faster performance. It goes all the way to 64 GB of RAM support and up to 2TB of SSD storage.

It comes with many ports thankfully. It has two USB A, four USB C ports, and ethernet port.

The Mac mini starts at USD 799 for quad core i3 processor, 8GB RAM and 12GB of storage.
